What is Data Center Cooling?

Data center cooling, also known as data center thermal management, refers to a series of cooling measures taken to maintain a suitable temperature environment for the normal operation of equipment ( servers, IT equipment and other electronic devices that generate a large amount of heat) inside the data center. Data Center Cooling Technologies

Air cooling technology

Air cooling technology uses air flow to dissipate heat from the data center. According to the different air flow mode, air cooling technology can be divided into natural convection and forced convection. Natural convection relies on the thermal lift generated by the equipment’s own heat, without additional energy consumption, but the heat dissipation efficiency is low. Forced convection speeds up the flow of air through devices such as fans, improving cooling efficiency but increasing energy consumption.The traditional air-cooling systems include computer room air handlers (CRAH) and computer room air conditioners (CRAC).

Water cooling technology

Water cooling technology uses water as a heat conduction medium, and takes away the heat generated by the equipment through the circulation of water. Water cooling technology has high heat dissipation efficiency and can be used in high-density data centers. The high-pressure pipeline network circulates cold water to heat exchangers or cooling coils within the data center and to the servers themselves. The cold water circulates through the pipes, absorbing the heat generated by the servers and other equipment. As the water absorbs the heat and becomes hot, it is sent to the chillers. However, water-cooling technology requires additional equipment and water resources and is expensive to maintain.

Evaporative cooling technology

Evaporative cooling technology uses the principle of heat absorption when the liquid evaporates to dissipate the heat generated by the equipment through the evaporation process. This technology involves spraying water onto the surface or into the air. As the water changes from a liquid to a gas during this process, it evaporates and absorbs a large amount of heat, resulting in a cooling effect. This technology has the advantages of high heat dissipation efficiency and water saving, but there are some problems such as complex equipment and difficult maintenance. This cooling method is particularly effective in areas with arid or low-humidity climates.

Liquid cooling technology

Liquid cooling technology is a server cooling technology, through coolant (water or dedicated coolant) circulation in the equipment, directly absorb and take away heat. Liquid cooling mainly includes two types: immersion cooling and direct liquid cooling,DLC (or direct to chip liquid cooling). This cooling method is more efficient, suitable for high-performance computing environments and training of deep learning models, but it is also relatively expensive and difficult to maintain.
